What is idiopathic hypersomnia?

Idiopathic hypersomnia is a sleep disorder characterised by persistent excessive sleepiness that is not better explained by insufficient sleep or another condition. Some people also report long sleep duration and marked difficulty waking.

Sleep inertia

A prominent feature can be severe sleep inertia: prolonged grogginess, confusion or difficulty becoming fully alert after waking. Naps may be long and may not feel refreshing.

How it differs from narcolepsy

Idiopathic hypersomnia and narcolepsy can overlap in the symptom of daytime sleepiness, but their clinical patterns and sleep-test findings differ. Cataplexy points strongly toward narcolepsy type 1 rather than idiopathic hypersomnia.

Diagnosis requires careful exclusion

A specialist considers sleep duration, schedule, medicines, other sleep disorders and medical causes. Objective sleep testing may be recommended as part of the diagnostic process.
