Polysomnography: Overnight Sleep Study

Learn what overnight polysomnography records, why it may be performed before an MSLT and how it contributes to narcolepsy and sleep-disorder assessment.

What is polysomnography?

Polysomnography is an overnight sleep study that records several physiological signals while you sleep. It helps the sleep team understand sleep stages, breathing and events that may disturb sleep.

What can be monitored

Depending on the study, monitoring can include brain activity, eye movements, muscle activity, heart rhythm, airflow, breathing effort and blood oxygen. The laboratory team explains the sensors before the study.

Why it matters before an MSLT

When narcolepsy is being investigated, the overnight study helps document the night before the daytime MSLT and can identify other sleep disorders that may contribute to daytime sleepiness.

Results need clinical interpretation

A sleep study is not interpreted in isolation. The sleep specialist combines the recording with symptoms, sleep history and other relevant information to decide what the findings mean for the individual patient.

Next step

Discuss your symptoms with a sleep specialist.

If you are concerned about narcolepsy, hypersomnia or persistent daytime sleepiness, you can begin with an online consultation. Testing in Casablanca is arranged only when clinically indicated.
